Toy Poodle Characteristics:
The Toy Poodle is a lively, sensitive, playful, loyal, energetic, happy and loving
dog who becomes attached not just to one person but to the entire family. They
are wonderful family companions who don't like to be left alone for hours. They
are very human-oriented, and can sometimes turn mischievous if ignored or neglected.
They are extremely easy to train, and they love to learn tricks and games or
participate in dog sports like agility or obedience. They are eager to please
you and quick to learn. They have a remarkable way of seeming to understand your
words and expressions and exactly what you want. Toy Poodles are playful and
fun-loving, and they like to play fetch and chase balls. They are a high energy
dog with lots of stamina. They can walk with you for miles, or run madly around
the house or yard. Toy Poodles need a daily walk or outdoor play. Without enough
exercise, they can become high-strung or nervous. But if you play and work with
your Poodle, he/she is able to settle and snuggle contentedly with you on the
sofa for hours. Toy Poodles have wonderful swimming abilities and they love to
play and splash in water! They can occasionally be demanding or jealous, and
is an instinctively protective dog. They make outstanding watchdogs, as they
will bark energetically at the approach of a stranger. They can be shy with visitors
and new people, but generally get along well with other animals and pets. Caring,
generally calm and good-tempered friend, they can be patient and playful with
children, but should be supervised with very young children, as they can become
nervous. Poodles virtually don't shed, and so would be a good pet if you like
your home clean and free of hair.
Appearance:
The standard Toy Poodle is 10 inches tall (to shoulders) and weighs 7 to 9 pounds.
He has a long, soft, curly coat. His coat color is usually solid, in white, black,
apricot or gray.
Grooming: Pet
coat: The Poodles coat only needs to be brushed occasionally, and clipped short
every few months. Show coat: Brushed for 10 to 15 minutes daily to prevent tangling
and matting, and clipped short and scissored into shape every 6 weeks.
History:
The breed originated in Germany. The stylish "Poodle clip" was designed
by hunters to help the dogs move through the water more efficiently. The patches
of hair left on the body are meant to protect vital organs and joints which are
susceptible to cold. The Standard variety is the oldest of the three varieties.
The Miniature variety may have been used for truffle hunting. The Toy Poodle
was often used in performances and circuses. Although he is the national dog
of France, his name comes from the German word "pudelin," which means
"to splash in water." He was known throughout Europe by the 15th and
16th centuries, his image recorded by artists including Durer and Goya. He was
a special favorite during the reign of King Louis XVI, and has remained an enormously
popular breed in the centuries since.
About Copper:
Copper is a wonderful little boy who loves to cuddle and sleep underneath the
covers at my feet. He is playful, loving and very eager to please. Copper has
proven to be a wonderful little stud for us. With 7 Champions in his 3 generation
pedigree alone, we hope to pass on his wonderful traits and small stature to
produce not only AKC Registered "Pocket Poodles" but tiny hybrids as
well.
